Wellbeing
Learning and Wellbeing Go Hand in Hand
At Paterson Public School, we believe that students thrive when learning and wellbeing are nurtured together. We are committed to creating a supportive environment where every child feels safe, valued, and empowered to succeed. Through a balanced focus on academic excellence and emotional growth, we help students build confidence, resilience, and a lifelong love of learning. Because when students feel well, they learn well, and when they learn well, they flourish.
How we support student wellbeing
Supporting each student’s mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing is part of everyday school life.
We do this through:
- teachers who help students feel welcome and included
- access to school counsellors, school psychologists and specialist staff
- programs that support health, social skills, attendance and positive behaviour
- help for students who are new or changing year levels
- clear expectations for behaviour and respectful relationships
- staff who get to know each child and work closely with families
- developing health care plans for students
- open communication about wellbeing and support.
School Counsellor
Our school offers a confidential counselling service to our students.
School counsellor can:
-
support students who are worrying about school work, friends, behaviour or feeling down
-
help parents and carers make decisions about their child's education
-
assess a student's learning and behaviour
-
work with teachers and students to support learning needs and disabilities
-
connect families with other agencies for student wellbeing.
Grow Your Mind
At Mascot Public School, student wellbeing is underpinned by Grow Your Mind and clearly defined wellbeing practices and behavioural expectations to support our students as optimistic, compassionate and actively engaged learners.
Positive engagement, self-regulated learning and the ongoing recognition of student achievement play an essential role in our wellbeing framework, and are reinforced explicitly and incidentally both in class and as a whole school. Through this process, our students are encouraged to contribute to their own wellbeing as well as being expected to support the wellbeing of others and the collective wellbeing of the school community.
What is Grow Your Mind?
GYM is a whole school wellbeing program for students, teachers and families. It provides schools with a common language about what it means and feels to be mentally healthy. We believe that the more we embed messages about emotional health in young children, the more chance we have of positive mental health outcomes now and later in life.
GYM introduces our students to topics such as brain awareness, resilience, mindfulness and compassion and, through discussion and activities, it makes these topics relatable for them.
