Transitions at Paterson Public School

Kindergarten Transition

At Paterson Public School, the transition from pre-school to kindergarten is thoughtfully and expertly managed to ensure every child and family feels welcomed and confident. We provide a nurturing environment where children can gradually acclimate through engaging orientation sessions and collaborative activities with both pre-school and kindergarten staff. Our strong communication with families fosters a supportive partnership, easing any concerns and building trust. The personalised approach allows us to recognise each child’s unique needs and strengths, promoting a smooth and positive start to their educational journey. This comprehensive transition process truly sets the foundation for a successful and joyful learning experience.

Our Connection and Transition Program with Paterson Valley Preschool

At Paterson Public School, we are incredibly proud of our strong and nurturing connection with Paterson Valley Preschool. Throughout the year, our preschool friends join us for special school events such as Education Week celebrations and the Easter Hat Parade. These shared experiences help build a strong sense of belonging, connection, and confidence well before children begin Kindergarten.

Our partnership is truly two-way. We also visit the preschool for special occasions, including National Simultaneous Storytime, where our students read the story, lead activities, and build positive relationships with the children. These moments create familiarity, trust, and joy across both settings.

By welcoming preschool students into our school community early and by bringing our school community to them, we create warm relationships and a smooth, supported transition. When it’s time to start “big school,” our youngest learners already feel at home, connected, and ready to thrive.

Our Connection and Transition Program with Dungog High School

Paterson Public School is proud to share a strong and supportive partnership with Dungog High School, ensuring our students experience a seamless, confident, and well-prepared transition into their secondary education.

Throughout the year, our Year 6 students engage in a comprehensive transition program that allows them to build meaningful connections, explore new learning environments, and develop a sense of belonging before they begin Year 7.

Students participate in a range of activities, including transition days, taster lessons, subject rotations, and opportunities to experience the specialist facilities at Dungog High School. These visits help students gain familiarity with high school routines, meet key staff members, and discover the exciting opportunities awaiting them—academically, socially, and culturally.

Our connection extends beyond transition days. We work closely with the DHS team to share student strengths, learning needs, and individual achievements to ensure personalised support is in place from day one. This strong collaboration allows both schools to celebrate our students as learners and set them up for success.

We are proud of the genuine partnership between Paterson Public School and Dungog High School—one built on communication, continuity, and care. Together, we ensure every student enters high school feeling confident, supported, and ready for the next chapter of their learning journey.
